Massive Chalice is a new tactical strategy by renowned developers Double Fine. Their Kickstarter project has a funding deadline of 27 June 2013 but has already received 118% of its target from 22,884 backers – so it looks like the game is set to be a huge success.

Title - Massive Chalice set to be a massive success

Since the triumph of the Broken Age Kickstarter campaign, the developers have made quite a name for themselves in the crowd-funding world. We became official backers for this upcoming adventure after purchasing the Humble Double Fine Bundle last month and then got a heads-up about Massive Chalice. After hearing that the new title is inspired by classic tactical strategy games as well as Game of Thrones (one of our favourite TV series at the moment) we hopped on board – and besides, the promotional video below is definitely worth a minimum of $20.

Double Fine have come up with a unique way of describing their project on its Kickstarter page: “If turn-based tactics and feudal fantasy had a lovechild, and that offspring founded a mighty century-spanning dynasty, it would be Massive Chalice.” As an immortal King or Queen, players must unite their kingdom under a powerful reign, train generations of heroes to repel a demonic invasion and re-forge the huge goblet itself. All in a days’ work, eh?

The game is structured into two main layers of strategy and tactics. In the former you’ll oversee your empire, arrange royal marriages, conduct research and make far-reaching decisions that will determine the fate of your legacy; whilst in the latter, you’ll fight brutal battles using small squads of customisable champions. Your heroes will grow, age and eventually die, so you’ll have to choose between keeping them on the battlefield or retiring them from combat to foster a new generation of warriors.

Last year, Double Fine’s Kickstarter for Broken Age shattered all previous records and received a total of $3,336,371 – over 834% of the intended $400,000 target. But the team working on this adventure represents only a third of the studio and so they’re looking for something else to keep them busy. Their goal is to remain independent and a successful campaign will see that Massive Chalice sticks to their creative vision, is updated on their own schedule, and is released DRM-free.

Brad Muir is clearly excited about Massive Chalice's success so far.

Brad Muir is heading up the group and, thrilled by the amount of support received so far, provided the following update: “Wooooo! From the moment we launched the Massive Chalice Kickstarter it has been crazy around here. We are blown away by your support. The Massive Chalice team and all of Double Fine can’t thank you enough. You are all so very beautiful!” Why, thank you very much for the compliment.

The Kickstarter campaign is due to end on 27 June 2013 and it’s now a case of seeing how much the final amount raised will be, rather than whether the project will be successful. Double Fine is looking to release Massive Chalice on Windows, Mac and Linux in September 2014 so there’s still a bit of a wait, but we’ll keep you updated on progress. Head on over to the page and give your support if you want to be part of the dream.
