In July we became backers for the atmospheric Monochroma, a black-and-white puzzle-platformer from Turkish developer Nowhere Studios. The Kickstarter project has now completed and with the game receiving 106% of its funding total, it has far from a grey future to look forward to.
Many backers have described the title as cross between Ico and Limbo, as it follows the story of a young boy and his brother in a monochrome world. One day they witness something awful: a crime committed by a massive corporation that makes their money from building and selling robots to the city dwellers. Alone in the rain, the two siblings must survive around six hours of devilishly-clever puzzles in order to save their world from tyranny.
Monochroma has already received a lot of praise from both developers and gaming sites, with Papo & Yo’s Creative Director Vander Caballero calling it: “An astonishing game that challenges even the top indie developers from the west.” Tim Turi of Game Informer said: “I constantly wanted to know what other dangerous situation was around every corner of Monochroma.” Take a look at our gameplay video below to make up your own mind, or download the demo for yourself from the official website.
The project was starting to look in trouble earlier this month and many supporters were worried that it wouldn’t hit the $80,000 target. But on 22 August 2013 a backing of a ‘huge amount’ helped push Monochroma over the finish line. The Nowhere Studios team revealed: “Volga Aksoy, founder of PixelFoundry, who made a Kickstarter campaign one year ago, just completed the remaining amount saving us from a heart attack… Thank you Volga for being an incredible person, you couldn’t reach your goal on Kickstarter but you’re still helping others to do so, it’s simply an amazing personality.”
The team have also thanked backers, saying: “We can’t be more happy right now. It’s all due to your generous support! We want to thank all of you one by one, thank you for supporting Monochroma, thank you for being a part of it. We love you as much as we love Monochroma.” They’ve stated that they’re going to make sure their project ‘really deserves’ the $84,644 it’s received so it looks like we’re in for an amazing game.
At present, Monochroma is due for release at the end of 2013 on PC, Mac and Linux so we’re looking forward to bringing you a review later this year. In the meantime, make sure you head over to Steam Greenlight to show your support and give the title a thumbs-up.
